Kyiv's Municipal Transport Fare Overhaul

According to Espreso.tv: Starting July 15, 2023, a single ride on Kyiv's municipal transport—including the metro, buses, trams, trolleybuses, and the funicular—will cost 30 hryvnias. This marks the first fare adjustment since 2020, driven by the need to align with current economic realities.

Updated Pricing and Discounts

Passengers who purchase rides in bulk will benefit from a discount system. Each transport card can hold up to 50 rides at a time, with a total cap of 100 rides per card. Additionally, from August 1, 2023, a new transfer ticket priced at 60 hryvnias will be introduced, allowing unlimited free transfers within 90 minutes.

A monthly unlimited pass for individuals will be available for 3,656 hryvnias. Students can purchase a pass for 1,828 hryvnias, while schoolchildren will pay 914 hryvnias. Socially vulnerable groups will continue to receive their existing benefits. Importantly, any rides purchased before July 14, 2023, at the old rate will remain valid until September 14, 2026. The previous fare regulation, in effect since 2020, has been officially revoked.

Experts have weighed in on the new pricing.

Ruslan Kandybor stated: 'An economically justified fare should be exactly 30 hryvnias.'
Viktor Braginsky added: 'The justified fare exceeds 30 hryvnias.' These new rates reflect shifts in the economic landscape and the operational needs of Kyiv's public transit system.

This fare increase is a key step in adapting Kyiv's municipal transport to changing economic conditions. The discount structure and new ticket types are designed to encourage continued use of public transit while ensuring the system's financial stability. This decision is likely to influence passenger behavior and the broader transport infrastructure of the capital, balancing the needs and financial capacities of its residents.
