Obligations of Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren in Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: Under Ukrainian law, adult grandchildren and great-grandchildren may be legally required to provide financial support for their incapacitated grandparents or great-grandparents, but only under specific conditions. Article 266 of the Family Code of Ukraine grants incapacitated individuals the right to maintenance if they are in financial need.

Who qualifies as incapacitated:

  • People with disabilities of Group I, II, or III;
  • Citizens who have reached retirement age.

If no first-line relatives—such as parents or other close family members—are available to provide support, the obligation may fall on adult grandchildren or great-grandchildren. In other words, when immediate family cannot step in, the younger generation becomes responsible for the financial well-being of their elderly relatives.

Social Responsibility and Elderly Care

It is also worth noting that starting in 2026, non-working pensioners who care for children or grandchildren under the age of 18 may qualify for an additional pension supplement. These legal changes underscore the importance of family bonds and support for older adults in Ukraine.

Thus, under current legislation, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have defined duties to financially support their incapacitated relatives, which could significantly impact their personal finances in today's economic climate.

These legislative updates aim to strengthen social responsibility among younger generations and provide a safety net for elderly people who often find themselves in difficult life circumstances. Amid growing economic pressure in Ukraine, such support can be crucial for ensuring a dignified standard of living for seniors in need. However, it is important to recognize that this may also place an additional financial burden on young people, especially given an unstable job market.
