Russian Patrol Ship 'Izumrud' Sunk by Ukrainian Forces Near Novorossiysk.
Destruction of the Russian Vessel 'Izumrud'
According to UATV: On July 14, 2023, Ukrainian military personnel destroyed the Russian ship 'Izumrud', a second-rank border patrol vessel. The incident took place near the port city of Novorossiysk. Launched in 2014, the 'Izumrud' measured 62.5 meters in length, had a displacement of roughly 630 to 750 tons, and could reach a top speed of 27 knots. This attack highlights Ukraine's growing capability to strike Russian naval assets close to their home bases.
The Ship's Role in the Conflict
The 'Izumrud' had previously been involved in the assault on Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait on November 25, 2018. During the latest operation, the ship was hit, resulting in casualties among its crew, including both dead and wounded. According to the Ukrainian Navy,
“Ukrainian naval personnel sank a second-rank border patrol vessel using the Sargan-3000 maritime unmanned complex near Novorossiysk.”
This event underscores the ongoing activity of Ukrainian forces in countering Russian naval power at sea and illustrates the severe consequences of military engagements for both sides. The sinking of the 'Izumrud' is a significant moment in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, as it demonstrates Ukraine's ability to effectively target enemy naval assets. This incident may also prompt Russia to reassess its maritime strategy in the region, potentially leading to enhanced defenses and a shift in naval tactics. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to affirm their commitment to resisting Russian aggression, which could have a considerable impact on the morale of both troops and civilians.
