Ukrainian refugees in Europe face a number of changes: will they receive basic assistance and temporary protection.

Ukrainian refugees have been informed about the changes in legislation and conditions they can expect in Europe.

Since the start of the war, many Ukrainian citizens have been forced to relocate to EU countries. EU member states are reviewing their policies regarding Ukrainian refugees, particularly concerning legal issues and support.

Starting March 1, 2025, the rules for Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia will change. The duration of refugees' stay in state temporary accommodation centers will be reduced by half - from 120 to 60 days. The state housing subsidy will only be allocated for this period.

However, it is important to note that these restrictions will not apply to individuals from vulnerable groups. This means that benefits will remain for families with minor children, the elderly, the disabled, and other groups of citizens who need additional support.

Beginning in 2025, Austria will introduce new rules for basic assistance for Ukrainian refugees. For example, owning a car may be a reason for denial of this assistance, as it is believed that a person who can maintain a vehicle does not require state support.

Unlike other European countries, Switzerland is more lenient towards Ukrainian refugees. The country plans to simplify the employment procedure for Ukrainians by February 2025, replacing the permit system with a notification procedure.

However, refugees will be required to actively participate in social integration programs, which include language learning, familiarization with local culture, and social rules.

The EU Council adopted a decision in June 2024 under which temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees has been extended until March 4, 2026. This decision provides a legal basis for the stay of Ukrainians in EU countries and access to social services.

It is worth noting that the Ukrainian government is urging its citizens to return home, especially considering the need for specialists to rebuild the country.

It is planned to create special 'Unity Hubs' together with the German authorities, which will facilitate the return of Ukrainian refugees home. For workers in certain sectors, there will be guarantees of exemption from military conscription.
