Ukrainian Flight Attendant Becomes First Civilian to Receive UN Peacekeeping Medal Posthumously.
Serhiy Prykhodko Honored After Death
According to UATV: Serhiy Prykhodko, a flight attendant from Boryspil, has been awarded the United Nations Peacekeeping Medal posthumously for his extraordinary courage. The ceremony took place at UN headquarters, marking the first time this medal has ever been given to a civilian. Established in 2014, the award has been presented only three times in its history.
Bravery and Self-Sacrifice
Prykhodko worked as a rescue flight attendant and instructor. He earned the honor for his heroic actions during an attack on an aircraft in the spring of 2025, while evacuating residents from the Republic of South Sudan. Reports state that he shielded others at the cost of his own life, a powerful act of selflessness.
His Ukrainian colleagues managed to lift the helicopter and save eight people during the crisis. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who presented the award, remarked:
'No one should die while serving the cause of peace.' António Guterres
These words highlight the importance of peacekeeping work and the dangers faced by those dedicated to helping others in conflict zones.
The recognition of Serhiy Prykhodko is not only a tribute to his bravery but also a symbol of the sacrifice made by individuals who risk their lives to save others in war-torn areas. By awarding the medal to a civilian for the first time, the UN acknowledges that contributions to peacekeeping extend beyond military personnel. This milestone underscores that heroism can take many forms, and that anyone, regardless of their profession, can stand up for peace and humanity.
