Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear condemned one of the leading Democrats, California Governor Gavin Newsom, for his participation in his own podcast with notable representatives of the MAGA movement.
Beshear, whose popularity in the strongly Republican state has turned him into a potential presidential candidate, told reporters that Newsom should not have given airtime to Steve Bannon, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump's 'America First' agenda.
'I believe that Governor Newsom is allowing different opinions on his platform, that is good, we should not be afraid to talk and debate with anyone,' Beshear said at the Democratic Institute for Political Affairs in Virginia. 'But Steve Bannon promotes hate, anger, and sometimes, even advocates for violence, and I believe that we should not give him any opportunity to appear on any platform anywhere, anytime.'
This criticism of Newsom, who is widely expected to be in the presidential race, may mark the beginning of a new phase in Democratic Party reconciliation. It also reflects fractures within the party as it tries to find its footing after Trump's devastating victory.
Recently, the California governor launched a podcast that seems to be an attempt to reach out to the rising conservative movement.
In the first episode, speaking with Charlie Kirk from Turning Point USA, Newsom drew broad attention—and received criticism—for declaring that Democrats were wrong to allow transgender athletes to compete in girls’ youth sports competitions. He also criticized progressives calling to defund the police or using the gender-neutral term 'Latinx.'
Newsom defended his approach and his interview with Bannon in an electronic statement on Wednesday, saying it is 'critically important' to understand the Trump movement and its successful actions in the previous campaign.
In the hour-long episode, Bannon repeated debunked claims that the 2020 elections were rigged, as well as discussing issues of tariffs and taxes.
'I think we all agreed after the last election that it is important for Democrats to find new and unique ways to communicate with people,' Newsom said.
Newsom's spokesperson, who plans to invite Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the next episode, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Beshear's remarks.
Kentucky's governor, who was an official speaker at the conference alongside Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, was not alone in criticizing Bannon's interview.
Former Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger, who was one of the few Republicans in Congress who challenged Trump, called the decision to invite Bannon 'incomprehensible.'
'I am shocked by the stupidity [of Newsom], inviting Steve Bannon to his podcast,' Kinzinger said on Wednesday. 'Many of us really battled Bannon, and Newsom is trying to build a career and break into the presidency.'
