According to Novyny.live: In Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro, metro stations continue to serve as refuges for thousands during Russian missile strikes. However, conditions remain difficult, as stations like Arsenalna, Pecherska, and Zoloti Vorota can accommodate only up to 2,000 people each. This limited capacity forces many into overcrowded spaces, heightening tension and risk during air raid alerts. Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine’s underground transit networks have become critical shelters, but their infrastructure was never designed for this purpose.

Vitaliy Selyk, a city official, stressed the urgent need for extra funding to improve station conditions.

“This equipment is currently stored at the stations and, when necessary, is distributed to people,”

Another issue under discussion is a potential ban on bringing tents into metro stations, which could ease overcrowding. As Kateryna Pop noted,

“the metro is a transportation and critical infrastructure system, and it’s very difficult to increase its capacity.”
