Ukraine's railway company imposes a sweeping alcohol ban on trains—here's what happens to violators.
Alcohol prohibition on Ukrainian trains
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) is implementing a ban on consuming alcoholic beverages aboard its trains, driven by ongoing issues with intoxicated passengers disrupting services. The company plans to tighten enforcement through spot checks and scheduled inspections aimed at catching offenders. Under the new policy, those caught violating the ban will be removed from the train and fined.
In addition to these measures, Ukrzaliznytsia has access to military airspace monitoring systems, which it uses to enhance security during rail operations. This capability will now serve as an extra tool to address alcohol-related incidents on board.
Company representatives stated: 'We are already taking the first steps—at our request, the contractor will remove alcohol from sale in the IS+ system, and then we will conduct raids and covert inspections on passenger trains.'
Through these actions, Ukrzaliznytsia aims to create safer and more comfortable travel experiences for all passengers, responding to numerous reports of disorderly conduct on its trains.
The social initiative '3000 Kilometers Across Ukraine' also requires identity verification via the 'Diia.Signature' system, highlighting broader state efforts to strengthen security and oversight in passenger transportation. Ukrzaliznytsia continues to refine its services to meet modern challenges and public expectations.
Safety improvement strategy
The new alcohol ban on Ukrzaliznytsia trains is a key component of a wider strategy to boost passenger safety and comfort. This decision reflects growing public concern over alcohol-fueled incidents during rail travel.
Monitoring compliance with the ban, along with collaboration with other state systems such as 'Diia', underscores Ukrzaliznytsia's commitment to adapting its offerings to current realities and user needs.
