The USA and the EU are preparing new sanctions against Russia: what will be included in the package.
According to FREEДOM:
Unacceptability of concessions in the face of aggression
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that no concessions to Putin will ensure security, calling for unity and determination in Europe in response to Russia's aggressive actions. The USA also threatened Moscow with sanctions if it does not take steps towards peace with Ukraine.
Difficult situation in Ukraine
Recent massive strikes by Russia on Ukrainian cities raise questions about Moscow's real intentions regarding peace. As a result of the attack on Kyiv on August 28, 25 people were killed, including four children, and 225 residential buildings were damaged. John Kelly, envoy advisor to the US mission, urged Russia to stop such strikes at a UN Security Council meeting.
“The recent drone and missile attacks on Ukraine, which led to numerous damages, casualties among civilians, and damage to residential areas, the EU delegation offices in Kyiv, and the building that houses the British Council, raise doubts about the seriousness of Russia's desire for peace,” Kelly stated.
On the night of August 30, Russia launched new strikes on Dnipro, firing more than 20 missiles and about 40 attack drones. While there were no casualties, there are significant destruction of infrastructure and residential buildings.
Actions against the aggressor
The Zaporizhia region also suffered strikes from the adversary: 12 attacks using missiles and drones led to the destruction of 17 apartment buildings and 120 private ones, resulting in one person dead and more than 30 injured.
“We are doing everything we can to put an end to this terrible war. But all our efforts in recent weeks have encountered an even more aggressive position from the Kremlin regime towards the people of Ukraine. And this will not stop until we unite our efforts to ensure that Russia can no longer continue this war, at least for economic reasons, and possibly also for military reasons,” said German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Diplomatic prospects
Kaia Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, noted that Russia is not seeking peace, despite numerous diplomatic efforts. The Danish Foreign Minister emphasized the need to increase pressure on Putin.
“We need to increase pressure on Putin. I think it is quite clear that he is just buying time, trying to distract attention from his ongoing attacks on civilians and infrastructure, and lately on the EU representation in Kyiv,” said Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
Tusk urged Europe to show determination and solidarity, stressing the importance of a strong position from EU countries regarding the aggressor.
“Recent weeks and days have clearly shown that no concessions, no tricks with Putin and aggressive Russia will lead to success and will not guarantee our safety. Poland, Europe, NATO, and the USA must once again, just as 45 years ago when we received support from the entire West during the formation of 'Solidarity', show firmness, determination, and unity in the face of this latest version of an empire of evil. Enough with concessions,” Tusk declared.
Expectations from partners
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that partner countries are ready to wait until September 1 for signals from Russia regarding readiness for a bilateral meeting. If such readiness is lacking, new sanctions may be imposed.
“Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it is ready for a meeting at the leaders' level. We have spoken about this with President Trump and our European friends. But we do not see any signals of such readiness from Russia. That is why there must be pressure. We expect that the 19th package of EU sanctions will be really strong,” Zelensky stated.
Currently, Brussels is preparing the 19th package of sanctions against Russia, including strict measures for maximum pressure on the Kremlin. Germany and other EU member states must soon announce their proposals for new restrictions.
