In Azerbaijan, 'Wagner' fighters who fought against the Armed Forces of Ukraine were arrested.
Members of the 'Wagner' PMC detained in Azerbaijan
Two members of the private military company 'Wagner', who supported Russia in the fight against Ukraine during the last military conflict, have been imprisoned in Azerbaijan. This decision serves as an important signal for soldiers that they will have to explain their military actions.
The detention of individuals of Ukrainian origin linked to the 'Wagner' PMC is the first case in the CIS where people are held accountable for serving in a private military force. Ramil Aliyev and Ismail Gasanov are accused of using weapons and attempting to recruit new fighters for 'Wagner'.
The verdict regarding the 'Wagner' PMC fighters is part of a shift in Azerbaijan's stance towards Russia. Baku has taken a course to contain Russian influence and demonstrates an intention to control this situation using coercive measures.
Azerbaijan's steps indicate their readiness to counteract Russian activity in the South Caucasus. It is also worth noting that a joint operation by the police of Ukraine and Moldova led to the detention of militants who fought under the guise of the 'Wagner' PMC, among whom were citizens of Moldova.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev unexpectedly commented on the conflict in eastern Ukraine and received our patches as a gift, urging to 'keep moving forward.'
The detention of 'Wagner' participants with Ukrainian citizenship in Azerbaijan indicates an increase in control over such individuals and positions Azerbaijan as a country that does not tolerate the participation of any foreign formations in military actions on its territory.
