This tragedy happened in the state of Bihar. Among the deceased were 37 children and seven women.
During the religious festival known as Jitiya, women in India abstain from food and drink for 24 hours, and also bathe in ponds and rivers. They often take their children with them as they pray for their well-being.
So far, the authorities have not provided details of the event; information about the causes of the tragedy is missing.
