ISW assessed the consequences of North Korea's participation in Russia's war against Ukraine.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War assessed the consequences of North Korea's participation in the war against Ukraine. They explained that the Kremlin is likely to involve North Korean manpower to support its efforts in the war. This also demonstrates Putin's dependence on finding alternative ways to form armed forces to avoid mobilization in Russia.
Experts noted that the consequences of North Korean military involvement in the war will be felt not only on the battlefield in Ukraine. Pyongyang hopes that its soldiers will gain military experience that can be applied in future conflicts.
"North Korea's military doctrine defines South Korea and the United States as adversaries, and the war in Ukraine gives North Korea the opportunity to 'practice' its doctrine in combat conditions that may resemble future conflicts on the Korean Peninsula," the analysts emphasized.
They also noted that the rapprochement between North Korea and Russia could threaten the stability of the Korean Peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region.
Despite North Korea's denials, North Korean soldiers are already in the Kursk region, ready to fight with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The Kremlin emphasizes the legality of cooperation with North Korea to prevent direct aid to Ukraine from South Korea.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War note that North Korea's joining with Russia could have negative consequences. It increases the chances of North Korea's victory or survival in the war and reduces dependence on China. Additionally, Russia may encourage military confrontation with South Korea.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the world to stop military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
