No New Speed Cameras Installed in Kyiv Since the Start of the Full-Scale War.
Speed Camera Deployment Across Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, not a single new speed enforcement camera has been installed in the capital city of Kyiv. Other regions across Ukraine, however, have fared much better. In March 2023 alone, 14 new cameras were placed in the Kyiv Oblast (the region surrounding the city), while 37 additional automated traffic violation detection systems became operational nationwide.
This lack of new cameras in Kyiv raises serious safety concerns, especially in light of tragic incidents. For example, on June 5, 2023, a driver in Kyiv caused a fatal crash after speeding at 150 km/h, resulting in four deaths. Such cases underscore the critical need for better speed enforcement on the roads.
Urgent Call for Action
According to Kostyantyn Andriyuk, other Ukrainian cities and regions have continued to prioritize road safety even during wartime. This highlights the pressing need for the capital to step up its camera installation efforts to improve traffic safety.
The absence of new speed cameras in Kyiv suggests that the city's approach to road safety may need a fundamental reassessment during the war. While other parts of the country work to maintain enforcement of traffic rules, the capital remains vulnerable. This gap could undermine overall road safety, particularly as high-speed collisions become more frequent. Effective monitoring could reduce the number of accidents and, ultimately, save lives.
