Ukraine Sets 3G Shutdown Date: What Subscribers Need to Know.
Ukraine's 3G Network Phase-Out Timeline
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine has officially announced a complete shutdown of its 3G network by January 1, 2031. According to Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybytko, 3G technology is now considered outdated for modern communications. To keep up with evolving demands, mobile operators will repurpose the frequency bands currently used for 3G to expand 4G coverage, which offers faster and more reliable service.
Transition to Next-Generation Networks
Stanislav Prybytko emphasized that the shift to newer technologies will happen gradually. He noted that
“this lengthy transition period was deliberately chosen to make the switch from 3G as seamless as possible for users”. This approach aims to minimize any potential disruptions for consumers, as changes in mobile networks can affect service quality.
The minister also assured that the rollout of 5G will not lead to the shutdown of 4G. Instead, 4G will remain the backbone for Ukraine's mobile network development. This reflects the country's commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies while maintaining the stability of existing communication systems.
For context, Ukraine’s decision to phase out 3G aligns with a global trend where many countries are retiring older network generations to free up spectrum for faster technologies. The shutdown is part of a broader strategy to modernize the country’s mobile infrastructure, aiming to enhance service quality for users. Transitioning to 4G and eventually 5G opens new opportunities for digital growth, supporting economic progress and innovation. With a phased approach, consumers will have ample time to adapt to the new technologies without major inconvenience.
