Cabbage prices have fallen to 1.5 UAH/kg: why farmers are urgently selling off their stocks

According to ТСН: Cabbage prices in Ukraine have declined again. This happened due to the warm weather and excess production, which forced producers to urgently sell their stocks, resulting in a significant drop in vegetable prices.

According to analysts, this week, storage owners are actively selling cabbage due to the deterioration of its quality. As a result, prices for substandard products have fallen to 1.5 UAH per kilogram.

Higher quality cabbage is sold at 2–8 UAH per kilogram, which is 23% cheaper than at the end of last week.

Experts note that consumer interest in cabbage is decreasing due to the large volume of products in the market, creating additional pressure on prices and forcing producers to make concessions.

However, some farmers are not rushing to sell, hoping for a possible price increase in the future.

Analysts indicate that currently, cabbage in Ukraine is sold on average 85% cheaper compared to the same period last year, due to a significant increase in production.

Many farms this season have expanded the areas for growing cabbage, but adverse weather conditions have negatively impacted its quality. Due to poor keeping ability, farmers are forced to quickly sell large volumes of products.

How much cabbage costs in supermarkets

Despite the sharp decline in purchase prices, the cost of the vegetable remains higher in retail chains:

  • ATB — 7.95 UAH/kg

  • Varus — 7.90 UAH/kg

  • Silpo — from 14 UAH/kg

Experts do not rule out further price fluctuations depending on weather conditions, demand, and supply volumes in the market.

The cabbage market situation in Ukraine indicates significant changes in commercial conditions due to increased production. Price drops may impact the selling practices among farmers, who should be expected to make decisions about selling leftovers, considering the entire range of market conditions. Against the backdrop of such changes, it is important to monitor trends that may develop throughout the season.
