5G technology is being tested for the first time in Ukraine at a university.

The Ukrainian State University has become the first higher education institution to begin testing 5G technology. This news was announced by Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov on Telegram.

The first 5G zone in Ukraine

Previously, 5G technology was only tested in the offices of mobile operators or at industrial sites, but now it is available at the university. To access this connection, only a device with 5G support and a Vodafone SIM card are needed.

The first building of the Kyiv Aviation Institute now has the capability to utilize the fastest network access through collaboration with Vodafone Ukraine, which launched a student 5G space.

Advantages of 5G technology

Among the main advantages of 5G are:

• Speed up to 10 Gbps;
• Very low latency of up to 1 ms;
• Open access — only a 5G device and a Vodafone SIM card are needed.

5G is not just fast internet, but also an opportunity for the development of autonomous transport, smart cities, manufacturing automation, and telemedicine. This technology allows for speeds and low latencies that are unavailable with LTE.

The pilot launch of 5G in Ukraine is planned to start from Lviv in October-November 2025, and if testing is successful, other cities such as Kyiv and Odesa will be connected as well.

Taking into account the high demand and the large number of devices compatible with 5G, Lviv, Kyiv, and Odesa have been chosen for the pilot project. The implementation period for the pilot program is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

The introduction of 5G technology in educational institutions in Ukraine paves the way for innovative technological opportunities in education and scientific research.
