NBU wants to rename kopecks to steps: when the decision will be made.
The National Bank proposed to change the name of kopecks to 'steps', which is part of decommunization. This decision is awaiting consideration in the Verkhovna Rada, and possibly by the end of 2025, the issue will be resolved.
NBU Head Andriy Pyshnyy emphasized the need to conduct a monetary reform as soon as possible and to make the Ukrainian monetary system completely independent from Russian traditions.
When is the renaming of kopecks possible
The parliament must approve this decision, although the vote may be delayed due to the holiday period for the people's deputies. Andriy Pyshnyy hopes to complete the reform by September 2, 2026, marking the 30th anniversary of the Ukrainian hryvnia.
Changing the name of kopecks to 'steps' will support decommunization and strengthen the Ukrainian language presence in the lives of citizens.
Why it is necessary to change the name of kopecks
The name 'kopeck' characterizes the change coins only in pro-Russian countries. Andriy Pyshnyy emphasizes that this will not require additional costs from the state, but will simply help Ukrainians gradually transition to the new name 'steps'.
It is also worth noting that Ukrainians can sell their old coins for a high price and that the European Union has refused to issue 500-euro banknotes and to mint coins of 1 and 2 cents.
By presenting a proposal to change the name of kopecks to 'steps', the National Bank of Ukraine is considering important aspects of monetary reform in the context of decommunization and strengthening the presence of the Ukrainian language, hoping for support from the Verkhovna Rada. This step is expected to help transform the hryvnia into a symbol of independence and solidarity with Ukrainian values.Read also
