Ukrainian Parliament Votes to Strengthen National Language with New Standards.
Parliamentary Resolution Adopted
According to Novyny.live: On January 15, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, passed a resolution to bolster the role of the Ukrainian language in affirming statehood. The measure, known as draft law No. 14334, received 237 votes from the people's deputies. This decision aims to elevate the status of the Ukrainian language across various spheres of public life.
Key Provisions of the Resolution
The main initiatives outlined in the resolution include:
- Updating and approving the orthography (spelling rules) of the Ukrainian language based on modern scientific approaches;
- Improving the linguistic quality of texts in Ukrainian laws and other legal acts;
- Enhancing standards for legislative drafting, particularly regarding the formatting of parliamentary acts;
- Developing Ukrainian-language audiovisual content through public media;
- Strengthening measures to counter the spread of destructive pro-Russian narratives in Ukraine's media space.
Other significant aspects of the adopted resolution involve ensuring the maintenance and operation of the Unified Glossary of Legal Terms, aligning it with the translation of the EU's 'acquis' terminology glossary, and creating a national font for official state documents. During the debate, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasized that
"it is unacceptable to use fonts of Russian origin in official acts and on state awards of Ukraine."
The passage of this resolution marks a significant step in reinforcing Ukraine's sovereignty and elevating the role of its national language. This focus on language policy, amid an ongoing hybrid war and the influence of pro-Russian narratives, is seen as a way to preserve cultural identity and unite society around shared values. The implementation of these measures is expected to positively impact Ukraine's linguistic environment and raise the level of education in language and orthography.
