What Happened in Sevastopol

According to Espreso.tv: On June 24, 2023, at 5:00 AM, explosions targeted the main electrical substation in Sevastopol, initially reported as three strikes, later revised to six or seven. The attack triggered a massive fire at the critical PS 330/220/110/35 kV 'Sevastopol' substation, a major hub for the city's power grid. As a result, the entire city lost electricity, leaving residents without power.

Broader Attacks and Aftermath

This incident is part of a wider escalation in the region. On June 21, 2023, fuel sales at gas stations across Crimea were completely halted, and earlier, on May 31, 2026, restrictions on retail gasoline sales were introduced in the occupied peninsula. Explosions were also heard on the night of June 23, 2023, in various areas, including near Feodosia and in Kerch, highlighting the increasing instability.

Sevastopol's occupation-appointed mayor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, responded by declaring that

“the city has switched to a regime of total conservation and prohibitions”
, underscoring the severity of the energy crisis and the need for drastic measures to maintain order.

The ongoing strikes in Sevastopol and across Crimea point to sustained tensions in the region, with serious repercussions for the local population. The blackout threatens to disrupt daily life and economic activity, as authorities scramble to restore power and manage the fallout from the energy emergency.
