Winter Injuries: How to Provide Pre-Medical Aid

Winter is gaining momentum in Ukraine. In some cities, severe weather conditions have already caused ice on the roads.

The risk of getting injured on the road is very high. Among the most common "winter" injuries are fractures of arms and legs, spinal bruises, head injuries.

The Ministry of Health explained what to do in case of limb injuries. How not to harm and when to suspect a fracture.

The symptoms of the fracture depend on whether it is open or closed.

Signs of an open fracture

If the fracture is open (with skin damage), there will be a painful wound at the site. Bleeding is also possible. In case of such a fracture, the functions of the injured limb are impaired, it may become unusually mobile or take an unnatural position.

Signs of a closed fracture

A closed fracture can also be characterized by pain, an unnatural position or deformation of the limb, its unusual mobility. However, with such a fracture, the integrity of the skin is not violated; a hematoma (bruise) may form under it, and the leg or arm may swell significantly.

How to Provide Pre-Medical Aid to a Person Suspected of Limb Fracture

Before providing assistance, make sure that you, the injured person, and people around you are not in danger. Calm the injured person, explain your next steps and call 103 to summon an emergency medical team. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions carefully.

If the fracture is open

cut the clothing and examine the wound;

if there is bleeding, stop it immediately (apply a pressure bandage or a tourniquet above the wound);

after stopping the bleeding, apply a sterile clean dressing to the wound;

help the injured person take a position that causes the least pain;

if you have received appropriate training, immobilize the injured limb. If you do not have the necessary qualification, do not touch it.

cover the person with a thermal blanket or regular blanket;

watch over them until medics arrive;

in case of deterioration before the emergency team arrives, call 103 again.

If the fracture is closed

help the injured person take a position that causes the least pain;

if you have received appropriate training, immobilize the injured limb. If you do not have the necessary qualification, do not touch it.

cover the person with a thermal blanket or regular blanket;

constantly watch over the person until medics arrive;

in case of deterioration before the emergency team arrives, call 103 again.

If the injured person loses consciousness and shows no signs of life, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Advice

Wear shoes and clothes appropriate for the season. Plan a little extra Time for moving around so you do not have to hurry. Take your hands out of your pockets when walking. Pay close attention to where you step.

If you witness another person's injury, do not pass by; and if you need help, do not hesitate to ask for it.

Walking during ice conditions is very dangerous for pregnant women. They should always be accompanied by someone.

Try to walk slowly, with relaxed knees, stepping on the entire sole. If you feel you are losing balance, squat down. This will help you stay on your feet. Do not keep your hands in your pockets. This increases the likelihood of falling and serious injuries.
