Government in Turmoil: Fedorov’s Resignation and Ukraine’s Leadership Crisis.
Ukraine’s Cabinet Shake-Up
According to Espreso.tv: On July 16, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada approved a new Cabinet of Ministers led by Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky. This reshuffle follows significant upheaval at the top levels of government, including the resignation of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who announced his departure on July 15. The same day saw further changes: Serhiy Sternenko and Serhiy Beskrestnov also stepped down, while Pavlo Yelizarov submitted his resignation on July 16.
Public Outcry
The public response to these decisions has been intense. A protest against the government reshuffle took place at Ivan Franko Square in Kyiv, reflecting widespread concern. EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius noted that Fedorov’s resignation caught the European Union off guard, underscoring his critical role in defense matters.
In his statement, Mykhailo Fedorov revealed that Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, had issued him an ultimatum. Amid these events, Kyrylo Budanov stressed the importance of national unity, stating:
“We cannot allow emotions or disputes to weaken our main strength—unity.” — Kyrylo Budanov
Meanwhile, Pavlo Yelizarov voiced alarm over the consequences, saying that “the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is a great evil for the country’s defense capability.”
These personnel shifts have sparked a broad public debate. As Kyrylo Budanov put it, Ukrainians “know how to—and have the right to—ask tough questions and demand answers.” The situation remains tense, with the new government’s next moves closely watched both in Ukraine and abroad.
Ukraine’s cabinet changes come at a critical geopolitical moment, highlighting the urgent need for stable and effective governance. The departure of key figures like the defense minister could impact national security, raising concerns among the public and international partners. As the country faces ongoing war and major challenges, the new government must maintain public trust and ensure efficient work in the interest of national defense.
