Prospects for Ending the War in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: According to recent expert assessments, the war in Ukraine is unfortunately expected to continue until at least 2026. Genuine negotiations to end the conflict are unlikely to begin before the latter half of 2026 or even 2027. This grim outlook is reinforced by the recent escalation in hostilities, including a major Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, described as the largest such attack this year.

Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko has stated that a swift conclusion to the war is improbable. He noted that a voluntary withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbas region is highly unlikely, as the president would not take such a step. Fesenko also emphasized that both sides will experience various forms of attrition as the conflict grinds on.

The Complexity of Peace Negotiations

The potential for a rapid peace has been further complicated by Russia's recent illegal annexation of the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. Fesenko believes an end to the war in the first half of 2026 is highly unlikely. While he pointed to the possibility of a gradual, phased ceasefire, substantive progress in talks may only be achievable several years from now.

Valeriy Pekar, Vice President of the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, highlighted the difficulty of the situation, remarking that the map depicts yet another round of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations that have so far yielded no significant breakthroughs. Fesenko added that expecting a quick end to the war is irrational, as both sides continue to build up their military resources and activity. The conflict has become a protracted war of attrition, testing the endurance of both nations.

Therefore, expert forecasts indicate a prolonged conflict and the necessity for a measured approach to peace negotiations.

Amid escalating violence and the territorial complications arising from Russia's annexation of Ukrainian lands, the international community also faces significant challenges in finding paths to a peaceful settlement. This underscores the critical importance of sustained diplomatic efforts at all levels to find a solution acceptable to both sides. However, given the conclusions of specialists, any tangible shifts are only expected in the medium term.
