Potato Crisis in Ukraine: Prices Will Rise Due to a 21% Reduction in Planting.
Situation in the Ukrainian Potato Market
According to inkorr.com: Unfortunately, the Ukrainian potato market is going through difficult times due to the war and the occupation of southern regions. According to the Food Research Center, the area of potato planting and production volumes have decreased by 21% and 11%, respectively. This has led to a significant increase in potato prices for consumers.
Experts note that the 'low' price point for potatoes currently lasts only 2-4 months, compared to 10 months before the start of the war.
Potato cultivation in Ukraine, which is mostly concentrated in the south, is currently practically absent from the market. Regarding imports, there have also been changes: while Belarus and Russia were previously the main suppliers, now countries such as Azerbaijan, Turkey, Greece, North Macedonia, and Georgia are the main ones.
Data indicates serious challenges for Ukrainian farmers, who are forced to adapt to new conditions. The reduction in potato cultivation may not only affect prices but also the availability of this important product for the population. Restoring production will require time and effort, so consumers should be prepared for further changes in pricing policy.
