Vodafone Improves Connection Quality: What is Known About xPON and Which Cities Will Be the First.

Operator 'Vodafone Ukraine' has Started Modernizing Its Mobile Network
'Vodafone Ukraine' has announced the beginning of a project to modernize its mobile network. The company is using xPON passive optical network technology to connect base stations. According to the operator's press service, this will improve connection quality and serve as a foundation for launching the 5G network.
The company is initially focusing on the four largest cities in Ukraine - Kyiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv. In these cities, 40 out of 140 base stations have already switched to the new optical infrastructure.
“Transitioning to xPON is a strategic step that will improve mobile communication quality and pave the way for implementing new technologies,” said Yevhen Frunze, Technical Director of 'Ukraine.'
xPON technology allows data to be transmitted at speeds of up to 1 Gbps, and in the future, up to 10 Gbps, without the need to lay new cables. This enables the network to adapt to the growing needs of users and prepare for new technologies such as LTE 2600 TDD, which operates in asymmetric data transmission mode.
For subscribers, this means more stable connections, minimal delays even during peak times, and reliable performance during video calls, streaming, and online gaming. The optical infrastructure also provides fast recovery of communication during emergencies or power outages and is less dependent on weather conditions.
The initial work on building the optical channels is being carried out by Vega. After the successful first phase in the four cities, the project will be expanded to other regions of Ukraine.
As of March 2025, 'Vodafone Ukraine' has 15.9 million users. The company continues to invest in the development of telecommunication infrastructure, preparing the country for a digital future.
This year, mobile operators will begin shutting down their 3G networks to make room for 4G and improve service quality.
