Volker on long-range weapons: Biden revoked a decision that should never have been made.
The US administration has revoked the permit for the use of American weapons for strikes on Russian territory. This decision has provoked a negative reaction among experts.
According to Kurt Volker, an expert at the Center for European Policy Analysis, the decision to limit the use of weapons was arbitrary and should not have been made.
Volker emphasized that Ukraine has the right to self-defense against external aggression in accordance with international law. He noted that Ukraine can strike military targets if they are militarily significant while avoiding fire on civilians. The expert also pointed out that there are no restrictions on the range of weapon use in international law.
Volker also explained that Russia attacks Ukraine from very long distances, but the United States did not allow Ukraine to retaliate at the same range. This restriction is illegal and goes beyond the requirements of international law, the expert stated.
According to Volker, the decision to limit the use of weapons was driven by fears of provoking Russia, rather than legal or moral considerations. He also emphasized that Vladimir Putin knew he would attack Ukraine and should have prepared for the military consequences of his actions.
The expert believes that the revocation of this restriction is good news, but the change in US policy should be made without public declaration, as this gives Russia information about possible Ukrainian strikes.
