Hungary confirmed its veto on Ukraine's negotiations with the EU: what does it mean.
Hungary maintains its veto on Ukraine's EU membership
According to inkorr.com: The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peter Szijjarto, reported that Budapest's position regarding the veto on the start of negotiations for Ukraine's membership in the European Union remains unchanged. At the meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs, he noted that Hungary will continue to criticize the EU's policies that do not suit them.
Szijjarto emphasized that Hungary is feeling pressure from partners who support Ukraine's euro-integration and new sanctions against Russia. However, Budapest is determined to defend its interests, economy, and its citizens from potential negative consequences.
According to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Ukraine's EU membership could threaten Hungary's agricultural sector and food security, as well as lead to the infiltration of criminal elements from Ukraine. Therefore, Budapest does not plan to consider important issues regarding Ukraine's EU membership and will continue to block new sanctions.
Thus, Hungary remains steadfast in its position and will not allow an increase in utility costs for its citizens. It has confirmed that the veto on the start of negotiations regarding Ukraine's EU membership will remain in effect due to food security concerns and the challenging situation with criminal groups' activities.
The situation regarding Hungary's veto on Ukraine's EU membership continues to be tense and may have serious consequences for Ukraine's European integration. Budapest, relying on well-founded concerns, questions not only Ukraine's future but also changes in the regional policy of Europe as a whole. This issue requires additional attention from other European states and structures.
