Russia's Staggering Frontline Casualties

According to TSN.ua: Russian military losses in Ukraine have now exceeded the scale of all its wars since World War II. According to figures presented by Dmytro Zhmayil, the invading forces have suffered nearly 1.2 million casualties. Specifically, approximately 325,000 Russian infantry personnel have been eliminated since February 2022. This catastrophic attrition rate raises serious doubts about the Russian army's capacity to sustain intensive combat operations in Ukraine. The sheer scale of these losses is unprecedented in modern Russian military history.

Russia's Reserves and Ukraine's Required Effort

Despite these losses, Russia maintains a significant operational reserve of around 4 million personnel, with a total mobilization potential estimated at roughly 20 million. This indicates that the Russian Federation possesses the human resources to continue the conflict. Dmytro Zhmayil stressed that for Ukraine to withstand the Russian offensive, it needs to eliminate about 2,000 Russian soldiers daily. If Ukrainian defense forces can sustain a monthly attrition rate of around 50,000 invaders, it could significantly degrade Russia's ability to mount serious offensive operations.

Zhmayil noted that 'for the Russians, there is no such threshold of critical losses that would stop the Russian army from advancing.'

However, he also expressed hope, stating that 'we have a chance to hold out in 2026.' This suggests that, despite immense challenges, Ukraine retains the potential to preserve its sovereignty in a protracted war. Given the data on Russian casualties and its mobilization capacity, the question of Ukraine's resilience in 2026 remains open, though analysts believe the necessary efforts to achieve this outcome are within reach.

These figures underscore the severity of the frontline situation and the critical importance of strategic planning for Ukraine. Considering Russia's heavy losses alongside its vast mobilization potential, the conflict could persist for several more years. The challenges facing Ukraine demand not only military effort but also sustained domestic political and social support to ensure national resilience and readiness for future trials.
