Human Cost of the War for Ukrzaliznytsia

According to Слово і Діло — Інфографіка: Four years into the conflict, Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, has suffered devastating human losses. Since the war began, 1,030 employees have been killed, and another 2,923 have been wounded. The tragedy runs deep: 500 children have lost at least one parent, and 790 railway workers have been left homeless.

Infrastructure Damage to Ukrzaliznytsia

Beyond the human toll, the war has severely damaged the company’s infrastructure. Since February 2022, the enemy has launched over 4,700 strikes on railway facilities, damaging nearly 24,000 assets. Among the destroyed equipment are 46 passenger cars, 42 of which belonged to long-distance trains.

Between January and June 2026 alone, more than a thousand attacks targeted Ukrzaliznytsia’s facilities, continuing to threaten transport safety. The impact was felt on July 6, 2026, when temporary delays hit both passenger and suburban services—a stark reminder of the war’s irreversible effects on Ukraine’s transport network.

These figures highlight not only the scale of human suffering but also the destructive impact on critical national infrastructure. Ukrzaliznytsia, vital to Ukraine’s economy and public mobility, faces immense challenges in maintaining safe and stable operations. Ongoing assaults on its facilities endanger passengers and the broader economic system, underscoring the urgent need for restoration and protection. This crisis demands immediate attention from both the Ukrainian government and the international community to safeguard and rebuild the country’s railway transport amid the war.
