The RESTORIVER Project and Climate Risks in Ukraine

According to Espreso.tv: Under the international RESTORIVER initiative, WWF-Ukraine experts are analyzing climate threats to Ukrainian cities and recommending strategies to boost their resilience. This project focuses on identifying effective measures to enhance climate adaptability in major urban centers, specifically Kyiv, Lviv, and Vinnytsia. As climate change accelerates, cities worldwide face growing challenges from extreme weather, and Ukraine is no exception.

Climate risk assessments reveal shifting rainfall patterns in Kyiv: precipitation is becoming less frequent but more intense. These changes trigger a range of negative impacts, including urban flooding, water pollution, and the formation of heat islands. To address these issues, experts advocate for nature-based solutions (NWRM) that capture and manage stormwater, potentially offering significant improvements.

Key Measures for Boosting Urban Resilience

Proposed actions to strengthen cities against climate change include:

  • restoring lakes and rivers;
  • creating rain gardens;
  • installing green roofs.

In Kyiv, four pilot sites have been identified for implementing these solutions: Lakes Shaparnya, Mykolaichyk, and Yerik, along with the Vita River valley. Additionally, a catalog of recommendations has been developed to improve the city's ecosystem health.

The proposed measures span several key areas. In hydrology and water management, the focus is on restoring natural riverbeds of small rivers, reconnecting water bodies, and renaturalizing shorelines. Greening and maintenance efforts include creating biofiltration strips, rain gardens, and rehabilitating protective coastal zones.

Water management is another critical priority, involving the construction of temporary stormwater storage tanks and the reuse of rainwater. Furthermore, developing infrastructure for eco-friendly recreation and ensuring continuous monitoring of ecosystem conditions play vital roles in enhancing urban climate resilience.

Ultimately, the RESTORIVER project aims not only to study climate risks but also to implement practical solutions that can significantly improve urban ecosystems in Ukraine. Experts believe these actions can lay the groundwork for future city development in a changing climate.
