A British Woman Denied Entry to the EU Due to Passport: What Rule Ruined Her Vacation.
Woman Ruins Trip Due to Passport Rules
According to The Sun: A woman shared her sad experience when she was denied boarding her flight because she overlooked important details about her passport.
The incident occurred at Gatwick Airport when Chelsea Rodd was trying to depart for Milan for a three-day vacation with easyJet.
Chelsea Rodd could not go on vacation because of the 10-year passport ruleKennedy Newsand Media Kennedy Newsand MediaChelsea planned to arrive in Milan to celebrate her friend's 40th birthday on September 26.
But her vacation ended before it even began when she was informed at check-in that her passport was not suitable for travel to the EU.
Though Chelsea's passport was still valid for seven months, it had been issued more than 10 years ago, and under EU rules from 2021, she was denied boarding on the easyJet flight.
Prior to September 2018, the British Passport Office would add unused months from the old passport to the new one, resulting in Chelsea's passport being valid for 10 years and 9 months.
Although her passport is valid until April next year, the changes in regulations mean that under the 10-year rule, it no longer allowed travel to the EU.
Chelsea recorded a video about her journey home from the airport, explaining that she 'tried everything' to make her flight, including attempting to get an emergency passport - but it would not arrive in time.
She was forced to return home, resulting in her losing the trip to Italy, which cost her £418.
Chelsea posted a video on TikTok with the caption 'I just learned from my own experience that to travel to the EU your British passport must be issued within the last 10 years,' which garnered over 274,200 views.
In the video, she attempts to wipe away tears, saying, 'I should be in Milan right now.'
Other users were not indifferent: many mentioned that they had experienced similar situations.

However, not everyone was so sympathetic; some commenters stated that Chelsea's mistake was 'common knowledge.'
Another user noted: 'I am amazed that people still fall into such situations.'
Chelsea, who now lives in Bali, said:
'I knew I would need a new passport soon, but during check-in, they do not ask for the date it was issued. I travel frequently, and this has never been an issue.'
She also added that when she was informed of the problem at the airport, she saw her friends asking what happened.
'They say, 'It’s the issue date of your passport. You can't fly to the EU if it's older than 10 years. It's mentioned in really small print somewhere.'
Chelsea believes that only checking the passport's expiration is insufficient and wants the rules to be clearer for travelers.
She urged airlines to 'warn' travelers seeking flights to the EU from the UK if there are issues with passport dates.
In response to inquiries regarding Chelsea's situation, easyJet stated:
'Unfortunately, Ms. Rodd could not depart for Milan as her passport did not meet the current rules for travel documents. We remind customers during booking, at check-in, and through email before travel to ensure they are aware of the document requirements for travel.'
easyJet has a Travel Doc tool, on their check-in pages.
This tool allows customers to enter their travel details and check if they have all the necessary documents.
