Britain may withdraw troops from Estonia to defend Ukraine: details of Wallace's statement

According to ТСН: The 'Coalition of the Willing' is unlikely to guarantee Ukraine reliable security, as previous experiences do not inspire optimism.

Leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and the European Commission have demonstrated unity in rejecting Vladimir Putin's demands for territorial concessions to end the war, which Trump almost repeated. But unfortunately, this is not enough.

'Germany has already made it clear that it will not deploy troops in Ukraine by itself. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that he would bring the issue of troop deployment to a vote in the Bundestag, and only after a ceasefire in Ukraine,' he noted.

Wallace believes that the UK could provide assistance to Ukraine in the form of 'security forces.'

'We could do this for a short period of time, but it will come at the expense of something else,' he said, adding that this 'something else' will likely be the British combat group of about 500 troops that is permanently stationed at a rotational base in Estonia following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014.

It is expected that even one combat group will be a minor contribution from the UK, which is one of the leaders of the coalition alongside France.

The 'Coalition of the Willing' has developed security guarantees that it should provide to Ukraine after the war ends. In particular, Europe and the US commit to support the Ukrainian army, which in peacetime should remain at a level of up to 800,000 troops, to be able to defend the territory of Ukraine. Also, within this coalition, the creation of 'Multinational Forces of Ukraine' is planned to restore the Armed Forces of Ukraine, secure the skies, and safeguard at sea, with possible actions on Ukrainian territory. Additionally, the plan provides for the establishment of a mechanism for monitoring ceasefires, led by the US. Issues of preventing attacks, documenting violations, and responding to them are being considered.

Donald Trump stated that the United States is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, as this is a key factor for the successful implementation of a peace agreement.

At the same time, he noted that the current proposal for an agreement does not receive full support from Vladimir Zelensky.

Zelensky, in response, did not rule out that the war could end in 2026, but emphasized the need for significant stockpiles of weapons to guarantee security in the future.

NOTE: Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty is a key principle of NATO's collective defense: an armed attack against one member of the Alliance is considered an attack against all. This obliges each member state to provide assistance, including the use of armed force, if deemed necessary to restore security, although specific actions are determined by each state.

Thus, the discussion of security guarantees for Ukraine is becoming more relevant than ever. Although the coalition of states demonstrates unity on assistance issues, real steps towards ensuring stability in the region remain uncertain. What comes next will only become clear in the course of negotiations and the implementation of agreed decisions.
