Ukrainian Authorities Help Uncover VPN Admin Who Shielded Hacker Attacks.
VPN Service Administrator Exposed in Global Operation
According to Novyny.live: On May 26, an international law enforcement effort led to the identification of the administrator behind First VPN, a service exploited by cybercriminals to conceal their activities—particularly ransomware attacks. The operation involved authorities from seven countries, underscoring the widespread nature of this threat.
During a legally authorized search in Dnipro, one of the service's administrators was uncovered. Investigators seized the following items at the scene:
- computer equipment,
- mobile devices,
- over 30 servers.
These actions mark a significant milestone in combating cybercrime. The investigation, which began in 2022, reflects the extensive effort required to gather evidence and coordinate across borders.
International Collaboration Against Cyber Threats
Eurojust coordinated the operation, holding 16 international meetings to align strategies among participating nations. Notably, since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has neutralized more than 14,000 large-scale cyberattacks targeting the country—highlighting its proactive role in defending against digital threats.
This operation showcases global efforts to tackle cybercrime, which has emerged as a serious concern for numerous nations in recent years.
Uncovering administrators of VPN services used for illicit purposes underscores the critical need for cross-border cooperation in this domain. Given the ongoing challenges, such actions can significantly curb criminal capabilities and enhance cybersecurity in Ukraine and beyond.
