IAEA Secures Ceasefire for Repairs at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Following Russian Shelling.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Situation
According to UATV: Following shelling by Russian Federation forces on January 2, 2023, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is undergoing repairs to a damaged backup power line. The attack damaged a 330-kilovolt power transmission line. Currently, the only functioning main power line, rated at 750 kilovolts, remains in operation. This facility is Europe's largest nuclear power station and its safety is a major international concern.
IAEA Actions and Safety Imperative
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has dispatched observers to secure a local ceasefire around the ZNPP, marking the fourth such measure in the area. According to Rafael Grossi, technical specialists from Ukraine's grid operator will begin repair work on the damaged 330-kilovolt line in the coming days. Ensuring the plant's safety and operational stability remains a critical priority, especially amid the ongoing armed conflict. The precarious reliance on a single operational power line heightens risks for the facility and the wider region, underscoring the global apprehension over military activity near nuclear sites.
