In India reported 17 dead from an unknown disease

In the former Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, an outbreak of an unknown disease has been detected, which has already claimed the lives of 17 people, including 14 children. 38 cases of illness have been recorded, with symptoms including fever, nausea, weakness, and brain swelling, reports The Week.

According to the publication, the cause of the disease is exposure to toxins, but the specific toxin has not yet been identified. Medical experts emphasize that the exact cause of death will be determined after the completion of sample testing in leading laboratories of the country.

Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, director of the Government Medical College (GMC), said: 'It can be said that the cause of death is a toxin, but the exact type of toxin still needs to be determined. There have been reports of poisoning by organophosphates, but until final reports come in, nothing can be stated with certainty.'

Suspicions of organophosphate poisoning arose after patients responded positively to atropine injections, a standard antidote for poisoning with such substances. Organophosphates, commonly found in pesticides, herbicides, and nerve agents, can cause symptoms such as excessive salivation and tearing, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, muscle tremors, and confusion.

To check for the presence of 200 potential toxins, samples have been sent to toxicology laboratories. The relevant toxin is expected to be identified within a week.

The article also notes that a laboratory base has been established in the network, prepared specialists are present, and reference centers of leading scientific organizations are functioning, allowing for prompt risk detection.
