Western Allies Lacked a Contingency Plan

According to TSN.ua: According to Ukrainian Presidential Office Deputy Head Serhiy Kyslytsia, Western partners had no strategy prepared for a scenario where Ukraine mounted a prolonged defense against Russia's invasion. Kyslytsia stated that the allies were unprepared for either Ukraine's refusal to surrender or for the possibility that a full-scale invasion might not occur at all.

While the United States and the United Kingdom were aware of invasion preparations as early as September-October 2021, members of the UN Security Council were reportedly convinced Ukraine would capitulate 'within days, or at most a few weeks'. The war is now in its fifth year, yet Kyslytsia argues that Western partners still have not developed a sufficient long-term strategy to support Ukraine in a protracted conflict.

'I could not imagine that we would ever surrender,' Kyslytsia emphasized. 'But, unfortunately, they had no plan for if Ukraine did not surrender, or if the invasion did not happen.'

A Call for More Proactive Support

He further noted that 'if aid to Ukraine had started earlier, and not in the format of weapons supplies 'drop by drop', today we could be celebrating the end of the war, not marking its entry into the fifth year.' These comments underscore a critical need for more decisive and timely action from the international community to bolster Ukraine's fight for sovereignty.

Serhiy Kyslytsia's remarks highlight significant concerns about Western readiness for a drawn-out war in Eastern Europe. They point to a necessity for strategic foresight and warn of the potential consequences of insufficient support. As the conflict persists and tensions escalate, it is imperative for international allies to reassess and adapt their support mechanisms to the realities on the ground in Ukraine.
