Former prisoner escaped from the front road: court imposed a harsh sentence

According to ТСН: The Yarmolynets District Court of Khmelnytskyi region imposed a sentence on a former prisoner, who had the opportunity for freedom through military service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but escaped during a trip to the training ground. The man was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment for evasion of conscription for military service under contract (Art. 336-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Chance for Freedom and the 'Shkval' Unit

The accused was serving his sentence in the Kolomyia correctional colony for theft and violation of the inviolability of the home. When representatives of the Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support arrived at the colony, he decided to take advantage of the right to early conditional release to serve in the army under a contract.

The court granted his request for early release. In June 2025, the man was appointed as a shooter in the assault unit 'Shkval' of one of the military units.

Escape due to 'car breakdown'

On July 2, 2025, a representative from the military unit came to take him to his place of service in Dnipro. However, his trip ended in Khmelnytskyi region.

Near the village of Yarmolyntsi, the 'Volkswagen Passat' car transporting the recruit stopped due to a technical malfunction. The man asked to get out for some 'fresh air,' and taking advantage of the moment when he was not being observed, he escaped into the forest strip and disappeared. The next day, law enforcement officers detained him.

Sentence of the Court

In court, the man fully acknowledged his guilt. He stated that

'he sincerely repents'
and even expressed a desire to try to mobilize again after the new sentence. However, the court took into account his previous convictions and recidivism of crimes.

The Court's Decision:

  • For evasion of service, the court imposed 5 years 6 months of imprisonment.

  • To this term, the unserved part of the previous sentence was added.

  • Final sentence: 6 years of imprisonment.

This case highlights the difficulties faced by military personnel and recruits, as well as the importance of adhering to laws and regulations during service. However, the court's decision also underscores the seriousness of the violation that jeopardizes the military affairs and the security of the country. The court emphasized the need for clear accountability for evading service, especially in such difficult times.
