Pentagon Responds as Zelenskyy Urges US to Strengthen Air Defenses Following Strikes on Kyiv.
Ukraine's President Appeals to the United States
According to Espreso.tv: In the wake of recent Russian attacks on Kyiv—which struck shopping centers and residential neighborhoods—Ukraine’s president has formally requested US assistance to bolster the country’s air defense systems. These strikes have raised alarm within Ukrainian leadership, which is seeking to limit damage from future assaults of this kind.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that Washington is prepared to support Ukraine within its available means. However, American missile stockpiles have been depleted due to ongoing crises in the Middle East, potentially slowing the response to Ukraine’s requests. Despite this challenge, Ukraine is actively developing its own drones and missiles during the war in an effort to maintain its defensive capabilities.
International Support and Ukraine’s Urgent Needs
In addition, Ukraine has called on its international partners to help dismantle Russia’s ability to launch strikes. European defense systems such as IRIS-T, SAMP/T, and Patriot already exist, but their transfer to Ukraine has faced delays. This is causing growing concern, as the country urgently needs support to protect its cities from further attacks.
This appeal from the president underscores Ukraine’s pressing need to reinforce its defenses amid the escalating conflict with Russia.
The prolonged process of transferring advanced air defense systems from Western partners could significantly affect Ukraine’s ability to counter new threats. At the same time, the country’s active work on developing its own weapons technology highlights its determination to reduce reliance on foreign supplies and secure its safety under difficult wartime conditions.
