State of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

According to TSN.ua: The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is in a critical condition, operating on just one external power line. This situation creates severe risks for reactor cooling due to the loss of backup power sources. The plant is under Russian control, and its status remains a significant point of contention in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

On February 10, 2023, the 'Ferosplavna-1' power line was disconnected, forcing the plant to rely solely on the 'Dniprovska' line for its electricity supply. This highlights the extreme vulnerability of the plant's power infrastructure, which could have critical consequences for nuclear safety.

"The IAEA is ready to provide a clear assessment of the damage and its impact on nuclear safety and security" - Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA.

Discussions on the ZNPP's Status

In November 2025, Grossi also expressed the view that the Zaporizhzhia plant requires a 'special status'. This issue, alongside other disputed elements of a potential peace plan such as the status of the Donetsk region and the ZNPP itself, has been discussed at the highest levels of leadership. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized in December 2022 that resolving such disputed issues, including the plant's status, is a crucial component of the peace process.

Consequently, control over the Zaporizhzhia NPP remains a central element in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, prompting continued international monitoring and efforts to ensure nuclear safety in the region. The situation at the plant threatens not only Ukraine's energy security but also broader stability in Eastern Europe, underscoring the need for a more active role from international bodies. As Europe's largest nuclear power station, its precarious state represents a persistent global security concern and a stark example of the dangers posed by nuclear facilities in conflict zones.
