Critical Power Line Repairs at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Underway During IAEA-Brokered Truce

According to Novyny.live: Under a ceasefire brokered by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Ukrainian specialists have begun repairing the 330 kV 'Ferosplavna-1' backup power line, which connects the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to Ukraine's national grid. These critical works are being carried out under the supervision of IAEA representatives. The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe's largest nuclear facility, has been under immense strain since its occupation, making reliable external power essential for cooling its reactors.

The basis for this work was a truce announced at the ZNPP on December 28th between Ukraine and Russia. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated:

'Critical repair work has begun on the 330 kV 'Ferosplavna-1' backup power line, which connects Ukraine's ZNPP to the grid, under another IAEA-brokered ceasefire.'

While the IAEA reported the restoration of backup power to the plant on December 30th, this progress was short-lived. On January 3rd, the station lost power from one line following a Russian shelling attack, underscoring the extreme fragility of the situation and the urgent need for these repairs.

Significance of the Backup Power Line Repair

Repairing the ZNPP's backup power line is vital for stabilizing the region's energy supply amidst ongoing hostilities. The continuation of this work under IAEA oversight highlights the international community's efforts to support nuclear safety in Ukraine. Given the constant threat from military action, ensuring a reliable power supply to the plant remains a top priority for preserving both nuclear and energy security for the country.
