15-Year Prison Sentence for Zaporizhzhia Resident Convicted of Treason and Leaking Military Data to Russian Intelligence.
Zaporizhzhia Man Arrested for Collaborating with Russian Military Intelligence
According to Novyny.live: A resident of Zaporizhzhia was taken into custody in July of last year for working with Russia's military intelligence service. He was found guilty of high treason under Article 111, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code after passing sensitive details about Ukrainian defenders to the enemy. The court sentenced him to 15 years in prison and ordered the confiscation of his property. During a search of his home, authorities seized phones and computer equipment that served as evidence of his criminal activities.
The investigation uncovered an entire spy network that included the convicted individual. As part of the same case, authorities also detained the head of a local parish belonging to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), who had been operating on behalf of the 316th Reconnaissance Center of Russia's GRU. A third suspect, who had been coordinating artillery strikes on Zaporizhzhia, is already serving a prison sentence. These developments highlight the serious security threats facing the country.
Additional Arrests in the Same Network
This case underscores the immense challenges Ukraine faces during wartime and the critical need to root out enemy agents attempting to undermine national security. Detaining individuals who cooperate with Russian intelligence is essential for protecting sensitive information and ensuring the safety of military operations. The situation also emphasizes the importance of tightening oversight over people who may have access to classified data, particularly within religious institutions and other organizations.
This incident illustrates the scale of the threats Ukraine must confront and the vital importance of countering hostile operatives who seek to compromise national security.
