Bulgaria’s Backing of EU Sanctions Against Russia

According to Espreso.tv: Bulgaria has formally supported the European Union’s 21st sanctions package targeting Russia after its objections were addressed. The final version of the sanctions list excluded two individuals, including the head of a company that supplies components for Sofia’s metro system. This decision followed a meeting of the EU Council on Foreign Affairs held on July 13, as well as a prior session of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) on July 12. Sanctions packages require unanimous approval from all EU member states, making such negotiations particularly sensitive.

Objections and Their Resolution

Velislava Petrova, Bulgaria’s representative, confirmed that the country’s concerns had been taken into account:

“Bulgaria’s objections were considered, and these two individuals are no longer included in the proposed package. Therefore, on our side, we are ready to support it.” — Velislava Petrova

However, she also pointed out that full consensus was not achieved, as two other member states raised their own concerns that were not resolved.

Petrova emphasized that standing firm on national positions does not lead to isolation, reflecting Bulgaria’s commitment to remaining actively engaged in international affairs, even within complex sanctions frameworks.

This endorsement underscores Bulgaria’s determination to stay a key player in European policy, despite differences among member states. The accommodation of Bulgaria’s objections may signal flexibility within the EU, which is crucial for maintaining unity on foreign policy and security matters. Future developments in European politics may hinge on how other countries navigate similar challenges.
