Zelensky-Putin Meeting at the G7 Summit on the Table

According to Espreso.tv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signaled his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G7 summit, following an overnight Russian strike that damaged the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery. Zelensky noted that the United States and French President Emmanuel Macron have backed the idea of such a meeting, which could represent a significant step toward resolving the conflict.

Speaking near the damaged monastery, Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine has already extended an invitation to the Russian side but has yet to receive a clear response. He emphasized,

'We sent a signal that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7, because Trump and Macron will be there—Europe plus America.'

He also stated,

'Europe and the United States agreed, but Russia once again showed it is not ready to talk.'

Reaction to Putin’s Actions and Prospects for Dialogue

The large-scale attack on Kyiv and Kharkiv occurred just hours after Putin’s phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. On June 4, 2026, Zelensky published an open letter to Putin proposing negotiations. In response, Putin called the letter 'written with elements of rudeness' and said he saw no point in talks. By June 9, Zelensky indicated that the letter had produced results, though he did not provide details. On June 14, the Ukrainian president reported that intelligence agencies were tracking growing discontent with Putin among the Russian population.

Zelensky believes that 'this is, I think, a very good opportunity for everyone to meet together.' He also remarked that 'if he refuses peace, someone else in Russia can sign the agreement.' As a result, the situation remains tense, and the possibility of negotiations stays open despite recent events.

The prospect of talks between Ukraine and Russia continues to draw significant international attention. Support from key global leaders like Trump and Macron may reflect efforts to bring more countries into the peace process. However, while Ukraine remains ready for dialogue, Russia’s position is still unclear, which could complicate further negotiations.
