Zelensky and Trump may meet on Thanksgiving: what they will agree on.
According to ТСН: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a desire to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump "as soon as possible" — possibly even during the Thanksgiving celebration, to discuss common positions on ending the war. Although most aspects of the plan have already been agreed upon, Zelensky seeks a personal discussion with Trump regarding the critical issue of territorial concessions.
This was reported by the Head of the President's Office Andriy Yermak in an interview with Axios.
Territory — the only significant discrepancy
Andriy Yermak noted that the peace plan with 19 points (a significantly revised version of the initial 28-point document) generally meets Ukraine's interests and takes into account its "red lines" in all aspects except for territories.
The initial plan envisaged granting Russia additional territory, which triggered a negative reaction from Ukraine and its allies. According to Yermak, this is the only "significant discrepancy" that needs to be resolved by the leaders of the countries. He expressed hope that the meeting will take place on Thanksgiving, which is a significant American holiday.
"I hope that President Zelensky's visit will happen as soon as possible, because... it will help President Trump continue his historic mission to end this war," Yermak said.
“Historic” security guarantees
Yermak emphasized that the new project contains enhanced security guarantees that the U.S. and their European allies will provide to Ukraine.
"I think this has a very reliable look. I think it is a historic decision by President Trump and the United States to provide these strong security guarantees that Ukraine has never had before," he said, adding that the guarantees will be "legally binding."
At the same time, Yermak stressed the need to "forget about the 28 points" of the initial plan, as this is already "the past." Although Ukraine does not give up its aspirations for NATO, he acknowledged that the current reality does not correspond to the desire to become part of the Alliance.
"We live in reality; we are not in NATO," Yermak noted.
It is worth mentioning that during the diplomatic progress achieved in Geneva, representatives of the U.S. and Russia held new negotiations in Abu Dhabi regarding the end of the war in Ukraine, where an updated "Trump peace plan" was presented.
Current negotiations between the U.S. and Ukraine, as well as with Russia, are fundamentally important for the stability of the region. The success of concluding a peace agreement and resolving territorial issues will determine not only the future of Ukraine but also the entire European security environment. Therefore, the meeting between Zelensky and Trump could be crucial in this context.
