Zelenskyy Publishes Open Letter to Putin: A Call to End the War.
Ukrainian President’s Appeal
According to UATV: Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president, issued an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin urging an end to the ongoing conflict between their nations and proposing a face-to-face meeting to negotiate peace terms. Released on June 4, 2023, via the Ukrainian presidential office’s website, the letter emphasized that Putin has spent nearly half of his 26-year rule waging war against Ukraine.
Casualties and Peace Overtures
Citing May 2023 figures, Zelenskyy reported that Russian military losses on the front line exceeded 30,000 dead and severely wounded, with 63% killed and 37% injured. Noting the war has now entered its fifth year, the Ukrainian leader directly addressed Putin:
“Do not be afraid to exit the war—that is the main thing required of you now.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He further stated: “Ukraine proposes ending the war in a format between us and you.”
Zelenskyy highlighted that June 23, 2023, marks another anniversary of events tied to a rebellion by military formations in Russia. In his letter, he expressed hope for constructive dialogue, calling for a meeting to explore potential paths to peace. Concluding his message, the Ukrainian president added:
“Glory to Ukraine!” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
This letter represents a significant step in efforts to restart dialogue between Ukraine and Russia amid a protracted war that began in 2014. The push for peace talks signals Ukraine’s desire to resolve the conflict, especially given the heavy human and material costs. With June 23 approaching, this appeal may also aim to underscore the importance of remembering past events that have shaped current bilateral relations.
