What Europe Must Do for the Druzhba Pipeline to Resume, According to Zelenskyy.
Restarting the Druzhba Oil Pipeline
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that bringing the Druzhba oil pipeline back online hinges on Europe’s willingness to restart imports of Russian crude. The issue took center stage during a visit by a Hungarian delegation to Kyiv, which arrived for talks specifically about the pipeline. Leading the group was Gábor Csepek, Hungary’s State Secretary for Energy.
The Hungarian team was originally set to include five members, but one individual refused to cross the border out of fear of being drafted. This incident highlights the tense and complicated backdrop surrounding efforts to revive the pipeline, a critical piece of infrastructure for oil deliveries into Europe.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy: 'Why am I being pressured to restart the oil pipeline? How is that any different from lifting sanctions on the Russians? On one hand, we tell the U.S. we oppose easing sanctions—yet on the other, Ukraine is being forced to resume oil flows through Druzhba, at a political price that funds anti-European policies. That is also a form of sanction relief.'
The situation underscores the complex geopolitical pressures Ukraine faces amid war and international demands. Whether the Druzhba pipeline will be restored remains uncertain, and any resolution will require balancing Ukraine’s interests with those of its European partners. The outcome could reshape regional energy security and Ukraine’s economic stability, making it crucial for the country to maintain independence in its energy policy.
