Easing Sanctions on Russia Could Bolster Its Military, Zelensky Warns.
Statement from Ukraine’s President
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has argued that relaxing sanctions on Russia has not led to any shifts in oil or energy prices. He cautioned that lifting these restrictions might directly benefit Russian soldiers on the ground. Emphasizing the need to maintain firm measures, Zelensky stated:
“We must stay strong and impose even more sanctions against Russia.” — Volodymyr Zelensky
According to available data, Russian oil accounts for just 5% of global supply, underscoring the country’s limited sway over international energy markets. The Ukrainian leader also highlighted the importance of coordinating actions with the European Union, noting that Ukraine has already rolled out new sanctions packages targeting both Russia and Iran.
“After certain sanctions were eased, we saw no surprises,” Zelensky added, pointing to the necessity of keeping up the pressure on Moscow. He further argued that attempting to build a dialogue with the Russian side might be a misguided strategy:
“I think the discussion is about establishing a dialogue with Russians. But that is the wrong approach.” — Volodymyr Zelensky
The Ukrainian president stressed that preserving strong sanctions is vital for the country’s security.
In laying out his stance, President Zelensky underscores that maintaining sanctions is a key tool for upholding national security and economic stability. As the global community seeks to balance diplomatic efforts with security guarantees, the Ukrainian leader’s remarks may serve as an important signal to international partners about the need to intensify pressure on Russia. They also highlight that energy independence and market stability remain pressing concerns amid today’s geopolitical challenges.
