Zelenskyy Rejects Russian Demands, Citing Constitutional Duty and National Sovereignty.
Statement from Ukraine's President
According to Novyny.live: In an interview with Politico, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he cannot compromise on ending the war, as he is bound to defend Ukraine's constitution and independence. He emphasized that adhering to these principles is non-negotiable in the context of talks involving both Russia and the United States. This stance reflects the fundamental red lines for Ukraine in any potential peace settlement.
Negotiations and Their Complications
Since the start of 2026, Ukraine, the United States, and Russia have held three rounds of negotiations aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, a fourth round, scheduled for early March, was postponed due to the conflict in the Middle East. Subsequently, talks were delayed again at the request of the United States, highlighting the complex and fragile nature of the diplomatic process.
Zelenskyy stressed that the terms for ending the war, as demanded by Russia, pose a significant risk to Ukraine. He noted that
“ending the war on Russia's terms is a major risk. Moreover, it could be a historic mistake.”The President also expressed the view that Russian President Vladimir Putin has 'not much time left,' a factor which could influence future developments. This ongoing war is the largest conventional conflict in Europe since World War II, making the stakes of any agreement exceptionally high.
This situation underscores that for Ukraine, it is crucial to preserve not only its territorial integrity but also the democratic values enshrined in its constitution. Amid growing international tension and difficult negotiations, Zelenskyy's position signals an intent to avoid any agreements that threaten Ukrainian sovereignty. The situation in the Middle East also impacts global politics, which may further complicate future negotiation rounds and peace initiatives.
