What Ukraine Requires for Peace: Zelenskyy Outlines Security Guarantees and Post-War Needs.
Zelenskyy's Press Conference in Kyiv
According to TSN.ua: During a press conference held in Kyiv on January 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the critical importance of achieving peace and securing concrete security guarantees for his nation. He highlighted the urgent need for funds to rebuild both the military and the country after the war concludes, while also accusing Russia of deliberately stalling peace negotiations.
Security Guarantees and Military Requirements
Discussing security guarantees, Zelenskyy stated they must be robust and effective to earn the trust of the entire Ukrainian population.
“Security guarantees must be actionable to inspire faith among all Ukrainian people,” he declared. The President further emphasized that maintaining Ukraine's defense forces will require 800,000 military personnel.
Zelenskyy also pointed to delays in prisoner exchanges, noting that a planned swap of 1,000 prisoners with Russia has been postponed until the end of 2025.
“Russia is dragging out all processes, starting with the humanitarian track,” he stressed. In his view, ending the war will require sustained and sufficient pressure on Russia; otherwise, peace talks risk becoming protracted. “Sufficient pressure on Russia is needed, and then it will all be over,” Zelenskyy stated.
Furthermore, he mentioned a potential $800 billion recovery plan for Ukraine, illustrating the immense financial burden the country faces for post-war reconstruction. “We need money to restore the army, we need money to ensure this army remains,” the President added. His reference to former U.S. President Donald Trump as a leader who could influence peace negotiations was another notable point in the discussion. These statements come as Ukraine continues to seek sustained Western support for its defense and future stability.
President Zelenskyy's remarks highlight the ongoing urgency of security concerns and the necessity of sustained international backing for Ukraine amid continued Russian aggression. His focus on the financial needs for national and military recovery underscores that without adequate provision and international assistance, the peace process remains vulnerable. The interest in U.S. involvement in negotiations also points to the crucial role of diplomatic efforts in achieving regional stability.
