Concerns Over Removing the Math Test

According to Espreso.tv: Journalist Maryna Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva has raised the alarm about a proposed removal of the mathematics section from this year’s National Multi-Subject Test (NMT), Ukraine's standardized university entrance exam. She stressed that technological education and math skills are vital to the country’s defense needs. During wartime, she argued, it is especially critical to nurture talent in the natural sciences to support the nation through this difficult period.

On June 4, Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, Oksen Lisovyi, stated that the math test would not be eliminated. However, lawmakers from the 'Servant of the People' party have put forward a proposal to drop mathematics from the NMT, claiming it would ease the burden on Ukrainian high school graduates.

“Instead, the deputies—mainly from the 'Servants of the People'—are suggesting, and I won't even name them, that we should make life easier for Ukrainian children and school graduates by removing math from the NMT,” Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva noted.

Why Math Matters for the Country’s Future

She also emphasized that mathematics is essential for cognitive development, budget management, and drawing logical conclusions.

“That’s why, friends, we need talent and state support to develop our abilities specifically in the natural sciences,” the journalist added.

In her view, given today’s challenges—especially the war—technological superiority is critically important, and mathematics plays a key role in achieving it.

Notably, during his presidential campaign, Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised to raise teachers’ salaries to 4,000 euros, underscoring the importance of education in Ukraine. Against this backdrop, the debate over removing the math test has become even more pressing.

The discussion surrounding the math section of the NMT highlights the significance of education in Ukraine, particularly during wartime, when the country needs specialists in the natural sciences to bolster its defense capabilities. Proposals to cancel the test have sparked considerable backlash among educators and the public, as mathematics is widely regarded as a foundational discipline for developing critical thinking and analytical skills. The outcome of this debate could have a major impact on Ukraine’s education policy.
