Zelenskyy Chairs Security Council on Winter Readiness and EU Commitments.
National Security and Defense Council Meeting
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy chaired a special meeting of the National Security and Defense Council on March 3, where he announced that Ukraine has fulfilled its commitments to the European Union and outlined plans for preparing for the upcoming winter. This meeting was a critical step for the nation's energy security, especially given the immense challenges posed by Russia's full-scale invasion, which has now lasted for 1,469 days. Ensuring stable energy supplies is a matter of national survival for Ukraine as the war continues.
Energy Preparations and International Support
The council addressed energy readiness, with President Zelenskyy noting that Kyiv's preparations for winter challenges are currently insufficient compared to other Ukrainian regions. He stressed the need to adopt the best practices from across the country.
"We must now take all the best experience from the regions, with detailed tasks for our military and our diplomacy," stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The President also held phone calls with European Union and Middle Eastern leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of sustained international backing:
"Ukraine is fulfilling its obligations, and we expect the same fair and sincere attitude toward Ukraine and the interests of our people."
Separately, the President highlighted that Ukraine's expertise in defending against Iranian-made 'Shahed' drones is among the most advanced in the world: "Ukrainian expertise in protection against 'Shaheds' is now the greatest in the world." This underscores the vital importance of developing defense technologies and cooperating with international partners to counter modern threats.
President Zelenskyy's statements signal an intensification of Ukraine's efforts to achieve energy independence and security amid the ongoing war. Winter preparedness remains critically important, and addressing it will require coordinated efforts at all levels, including securing international assistance. The value of cooperation with the EU and other nations becomes even more evident in the context of global instability fueled by conflict and economic pressures.
